What are natural paints?

Paint products made with natural raw materials represent a class of products that goes beyond the common meaning of "ecological product" improperly assimilated to the class of improved products, that is products based largely on the technology of emulsion in water of binders of petrochemical synthesis, low formaldehyde release biocides, pigments and dyes often difficult to classify.

Natural paints: their characteristics and their uses

I would say immediately that in my opinion natural paints are based on a new approach to the very idea of production since the fundamental motivation in their use is represented not only by the need to create better living comfort in indoor environments with low emissions and with truly breathable treatments, but above all (and this must be the main motivation) by the desire to participate in a type of economy that respects our planet .

The production philosophy

No to oil

Producing using natural raw materials derived from renewable sources or spontaneous growth means excluding the entire chain that starts from oil extraction from the production chain: this would already be an essential contribution in itself to eliminate all the problems deriving from the use of oil. The use and transformation of this raw material has led to the devastating effects on the environment that we have only recently begun to perceive.

The pollution you don't expect

If the consequences of the greenhouse effect and the pollution of the oceans appear as remote events, it is little known instead how the pollution indoor far exceeds that outdoor in homes and public places, because of the materials and products present such as paints, paints, adhesives.

A different path

The development of alternative energies indicates how it is possible to abandon the unhealthy logic of the oil supply chain, which is actually deeply illogical in its structure. In fact, what rationality, what intelligence can we attribute to a system that, on balance, extracts alien material from the subsoil (oil) to create with undoubtedly sophisticated technologies, garbage and pollution in the atmosphere, in the oceans, on the land and in our own homes? If this system obeys the reasons of business and power, it does not satisfy common sense, it does not guarantee the aspiration to health and sustainable development. This is a system opposed to the logic that our planet shows us at all times: a system, in fact, perfectly functional made of closed cycles in which, thanks to solar energy, matter is continuously transformed: water, oxygen, anhydride carbon, minerals dance: they give life to animal and vegetable forms keeping the levels of the basic components almost constant, without ever creating "garbage". This logic, often considered banal, somewhat retrograde and not very functional, is actually the only one that has worked so far and to which it is mandatory to reconnect to keep the ecosystem healthy and vital. After this brief introduction on the main reason why it is necessary to move human activity towards an intelligent use of resources and therefore on the reason for producing natural painting materials for which the environmental impact, in the production cycle and use up to disposal, is as little as possible, let's continue with a brief overview of the technical characteristics of these products.

Natural paints as a product

Most natural binders, such as in particular drying oils (a classic example is that of linseed oil ), vegetable resins and some products of animal origin have a high capacity of water vapor permeability . In particular, drying oils develop resistant, extremely elastic patinas capable of conveying the small molecules of water vapor without particular problems. An oil-based paint such as for example LUMINOSA Paint n.275 is characterized by a sd = 0.0031m, that is, by the ability to allow transpiration of 6774 grams of water vapor per m2 per day. As a comparison, we must consider that conventional products defined as transpiring are characterized by values that oscillate between 400 and 100 g / m2 per day of water vapor, that is, it is a breathability that in the best hypothesis is 16 times less than that of our LUMINOUS Paint . The example of the breathability of natural products in comparison with synthetic products such as acrylics (better known improperly as water products) is somewhat significant.
